Databases and warehouses

Find and export
your Snowflake data.

Snowflake storage can include active tables and retained historical data. The inventory should identify those components because an ordinary table export collects a selected table state.

Find your Snowflake data size

  1. Use a role permitted to view account storage usage.
  2. In Snowsight → Admin → Cost management, review storage consumption.
  3. Inspect SNOWFLAKE.ACCOUNT_USAGE.TABLE_STORAGE_METRICS for the table-level breakdown.
  4. Record ACTIVE_BYTES, TIME_TRAVEL_BYTES and FAILSAFE_BYTES separately, with the databases in scope.
Active and historical bytes are different quantities. Fail-safe is a recovery mechanism with different access from user-queryable Time Travel.

What to include in your data inventory

Report in GB, using a named storage basis and database scope. Describe tables, rows and business date coverage.

Identify clones and retained history so the total can be interpreted alongside the tables proposed for export.

Add the dates covered and the people who use this software. Label estimates and describe how you calculated them.

Export your Snowflake history

  1. Have the administrator prepare an approved internal or external stage, Snowflake's location for data files.
  2. Use COPY INTO a location to unload the selected tables or queries in a suitable format.
  3. Collect all files from the stage or cloud destination, preserving schemas and table identity.
  4. For an earlier state, check available Time Travel queries and the retained period before exporting.

An unload normally represents the selected table state when the statement runs. Historical storage is not automatically added to that export.

A virtual warehouse may consume credits during unloading, and cloud storage can add costs. Confirm the planned scope first.

Why Snowflake data has value for AI training

Warehouse tables can connect records from several operational systems into a business timeline.

Schema descriptions and event dates can make those relationships useful for understanding a workflow.

What stays private

Choose databases, tables and columns in scope, reviewing sensitive fields and shared-data rights.

Telegraph Lab reviews the proposed material with you and agrees how sensitive information will be handled. Preparation can include excluding material, redacting details and replacing personal identifiers. Your company keeps ownership; the licensing agreement defines the material, permitted uses and authorized recipients.

Common questions about Snowflake data

Does active storage include every past table state?

Report Time Travel and Fail-safe separately from active table bytes.

Can we export Fail-safe as ordinary history?

It is a recovery mechanism and is not a normal user-queryable export source.

What is a stage?

A Snowflake location used to store data files, internally or in supported cloud storage.

Does unloading cost anything?

The operation can consume warehouse credits and destination storage. Review the scope and account configuration.
