Databases and warehouses

Find and export
your Amazon DynamoDB data.

DynamoDB exposes table size and item count in the console and DescribeTable metadata. These figures update periodically, while S3 export produces a selected table snapshot.

Find your Amazon DynamoDB data size

  1. Open DynamoDB → Tables with permission to inspect the required AWS Regions.
  2. For each table, review its Overview item count and size.
  3. A developer can retrieve ItemCount and TableSizeBytes through DescribeTable.
  4. Add the non-overlapping table sizes and convert bytes to GB, naming the Regions and tables included.
DynamoDB updates these metadata quantities approximately every six hours. Recent writes may not yet appear; index sizes are separate metadata.

What to include in your data inventory

Report in GB, with table count, item quantities and Region scope. Identify indexes, replicas and external media separately.

Use business timestamps in the items for the retained date range. A table's creation date can differ from imported history.

Add the dates covered and the people who use this software. Label estimates and describe how you calculated them.

Export your Amazon DynamoDB history

  1. Have the administrator confirm point-in-time recovery, the feature required for the native export route.
  2. Open Exports to S3 → Export to S3 and select the table, supported snapshot time and approved destination.
  3. Choose Full export and DynamoDB JSON or Amazon Ion as appropriate.
  4. Wait for completion, then collect the output files and manifests from S3.

A full export is a table state at a selected time. It does not automatically contain every earlier change.

Native exports and S3 storage have charges. Review the scope and permissions before starting a collection.

Why Amazon DynamoDB data has value for AI training

Items can capture business events and the application state associated with them.

Keys and field definitions help connect records into a sequence of operational actions.

What stays private

Select tables and fields in scope, reviewing personal information and unrelated application records.

Common questions about Amazon DynamoDB data

Are the console counts real-time?

AWS says table-size and item-count metadata are updated approximately every six hours.

Does a full export include every past version?

It captures the table at a selected time. Change history needs a separate retained source or supported incremental plan.

Is recovery enabled for native export?

AWS requires point-in-time recovery for the native table-to-S3 export.

Which formats are supported?

The native export supports DynamoDB JSON and Amazon Ion.
